Machu Picchu 2-1988

I’ve previewed the third 8mm tape. The digitized version is 1:36:47. It begins Jan. 20, 1988 at Grandma’s house in Lincoln. The first part is Nataly’s 3rd birthday and all the chaos associated with it.

The video includes a February 4, 1988 sequence at 131 Los Bananos in Lima. Papa Victor, Grandma Hayes, Sophi, Cati, Suzi, Nata, Lucho and Ruth are all featured.

The next segment takes place February 6, 1988 at Santa Maria Beach, outside of Lima. Grandma, Nata, Viv, Dad and Mom are featured.

A segment filmed Feb 7, 1988 at the Pachacamac Ruins just southeast of Lima in the Lurin River valley.  Our Suzuki is featured.

The next segment is back to happenings at Los Bananos.

A segment filmed February 11, 1988 documents our trip with Grandma to Cuzco. Quenko, Tambomanchay, Pisac, and Ollantaytambo are featured as well. Sophi (just barely 2 years old) was left in Lima with Ruth at our house on Los Bananos.

The video continues with documenting our train ride to Macchu Pichu (Feb 13 and 14) and the family exploring the ruins and hiking the Inca Trail to the Inti Puntu and concludes with a walk through Aquas Caliente.

The video concludes with a trip to Lago LLanganuco and Paracas. I didn’t catch the date but probably mid February, 1988.

Here is a short video [23:28] from the Third 8mm tape.

On this page I will post a video vignette or two from each of the 20 8mm tapes I had digitized. This is looking back to the years 1987 (previous post) to 1994.

Family History

A few months ago I finally sent in a box of 20 8mm videos to Legacybox, a company that specializes in digitizing old media. Somewhere along the line we lost our 8mm recorder that we had purchased in 1987 or thereabouts and for years now the 20 tapes have sat in a small box locked away in a dark closet. Every so often I would come across them and think to myself that I should do something with them. I knew they contained some valuable family memories.

I’ve created a short clip of one of the first videos-Christmas at Grandma’s house in Lincoln, Nebraska, 1987. The process of creating the video clips is a bit tedious but the wealth of memories I have on the 20 digitized recordings is staggering. Please take a moment and watch 6 minutes of Christmas chaos-

That’s 6 minutes of a 2:05 video! I plan to create 3 or 4 more short clips from this first video and will post them with comments via this blog. The videos start at Dec. 1987 and continue to 1994 when we first moved to San Antonio.

Please let me know if you would like a copy of the original 20 videos in their entirety and I will burn them to a DVD or save to a Flash Drive for you.

I am working at getting more clips created and shared with you. The clips are from 1987—1994 and mostly about our time in Peru and vacations/visits to the states.

Return to the Grand Canyon

Hedy and I will be driving (???) to the Grand Canyon Thursday and Friday (Oct 6 and Oct 7, 2022). We will meet up with my youngest daughter Sophia and her husband Tommy at the 7 Mile Lodge in Tusayan and spend 3 to 4 days in the canyon; perhaps a bit longer.

The main purpose of the trip, for me, is to spread the ashes of my beloved dog Colter, a true friend and companion for 16 years. I’ll make a separate post about this on my return to San Antonio.

Another goal of the trip is to participate with Sophi and Hedy to introduce the Grand Canyon to Tommy who has never visited. I’m quite certain he will be taken in by the grandeur and potential for adventures that the canyon offers. I hope so.

Helotes/Culebra Greenway

In January, 2016, I retired. One huge advantage that came to light very quickly-I could now walk Colter every morning! So, on my first day of retirement I texted some friends from work letting them know I was out and about on a local trail at Government Canyon.

Over the next few months we developed a system of hiking in Government Canyon on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays and on Sundays Hedy would join us and we would usually do a section of the Mission Reach Trail. Our favorite has been a loop from Mission San Juan to Mission Espada.

But we don’t do much of those hikes anymore. We found a trail so convenient (about 10 minutes from our house) that is always open. It is a section of the Leon Creek Greenway and we walk between two trailheads—Terra Oak Trailhead and Culebra Creek Park. Colter and I pretty much go every morning, very early. We are probably at the Terra Oak Trailhead by 5:15 to 5:45. Sometimes Hedy will join us.

Final Prep…

Vivian and I are completing the final preparations for our upcoming Grand Canyon experience. We’ve gone through the check list last Sunday and we’ve pretty much got everything in hand. Friday we’ll do a last check and then we depart early Saturday for Phoenix. In Phoenix we will take a rental car to Tusayan (with a stop at Denny’s). Sunday morning we will be heading down the Hance Trail on the first day of our 4 day hike. This is going to be the hardest day from what I can read in Hiking the Grand Canyon

The New Hance Trail is an exciting, challenging, and very scenic route to the Colorado River, but it is also the South Rim’s most difficult trail.

The book doesn’t mention the Royal Arch loop and I’m quite sure that is the tougher trail. But, I’ll be the expert after I see the New Hance.

We should reach the Colorado on the first day. The next day we plan to hike to Hance Creek and set up HQ for a day hike (day 3) to the rapids (Sockdalager). Then on day 4 we will hike out to the rim where we will have parked the rental car.

I have been preparing by hiking weekends at Government Canyon. I feel very good and am ready to tackle this trail.
