Escalante Route

Two years ago I intended to do the Escalante Route with Vivian but could not get permits. Imagine my relief when I received permits for this year’s spring break trip. I got my first choice and that enabled me to proceed with concrete planning for the trip. Here is a summary—

Sunday, March 8, 2015, Vivian and I will hike about 1/2 way down the Tanner Trail and set up camp. When I did the Tanner Trail with Sophia in March, 2012, we hiked to Tanner Beach the first day. That was a bit rough on my knees as the Tanner Trail has two very steep sections. By camping about 1/2 way down we will have completed 1 of the steep sections and leave the second for the next day.

Monday, March 9, 2015. The plan is to get to a campsite along the Colorado, somewhere between Tanner Beach and Hance Rapids.

Tuesday, March 10, 2015. The plan is to get near Hance Rapids

Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Hike about 1/2 way out of the canyon on the New Hance trail. We hope to camp near water that we happened across when Vivian and I hiked down the New Hance during March, 2011.

Thursday, March 12 we will hike out and should reach the rim before noon.

We’ll be HQ’ing at the Red Feather Lodge in Tusayan on March 7 and March 12 and return to San Antonio on the 13th.

New Hance Trail Completed…

Vivian and I returned late Thursday evening from our Grand Canyon adventure. I am currently working on the Grand Canyon page. I have about 30 photos that are OK. I was a bit disappointed in the quality but then again, that’s the price one pays for carrying a light camera. I have not yet seen Vivian’s photos but intend to mix the two together and hopefully present a good idea of this wonderful hike. Below are the GPS tracks for this hike—

Grand Canyon 2011-New Hance to Grandview
March 13 to 16, 2011, my oldest daughter Vivian and I hike the New Hance Trail to the Colorado River and then followed the Tonto Trail to Horseshoe Mesa and left the canyon at Grandview Point. The map above shows the GPS tracks of our hike.

New Hance

Viv and I are set to go on the New Hance Trail this coming March. We’ll arrive in Tuscayan in the afternoon of March 12 and probably stay at the Seven Mile Lodge. Our first hiking day will take us down the Hance Trail. We will probably park at the Grandview parking area and get a taxi to the trailhead. That can be scouted out after we arrive in Tuscayan.

According to my Falcon Guide, The New Hance Trail is the South Rim’s most difficult trail. I have been preparing since November so expect to be trail ready in March.

March 13 we will hike down the New Hance to the Colorado River. March 14 we will hike along the Colorado to the Hance Creek use area and March 15 we will camp on Horseshoe Mesa. We will hike out of the canyon on the 16th and return to San Antonio on Thursday the 17th.

I’ve added a new link to the sidebar—Grand Canyon Inventory. I wish I had done this some time ago. It will be very handy to have this page assessible and I can easily update it as needed. I have a seperate list for the AT that I’ll post sometime in the future.
