Family History Update 3

Slide Carousel 4 notes: My father labeled the rotary carousel storage box with the general categories Glacier, Jackson, Yellowstone, Sunrises, Sunsets, Aspens and Wildlife. Unfortunately the slides aren’t labeled but most of them are dated which helps when identifying the locations. Here are 3 slides from Glacier Park—

GlacierPark1
Wild Goose Island in St. Mary’s Lake, Glacier National Park, August 1958

GlacierPark2
Common bear grass, a species of Xerophyllum tenax, Glacier National Park. [PictureThis App.] September 1959.
GlacierPark3
Bob and Marilyn exploring Glacier Park, August 1961.

This photo is from somewhere in Canada, August 1961. My Dad loved to fly fish. He would tie his own flies. In the 1950’s and early ’60’s his work took him all over Montana and he would often complete his day by fishing the streams of Montana. A favorite was Spring Creek near Lewistown.

And from Jackson Hole in Wyoming—

Carousel 5 notes: My father labeled the box containing Carousel 5 Building Our Home. This would be our home at 2881 Blue Spruce Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is the home I lived in during my High School and University years and  this home, friends I made, life experiences and lessons learned during this time are forever pressed into my memory. I love Salt Lake City. I know that the Salt Lake City of today is different—homeless people, polluted air, a Great Salt Lake that appears to be dying and a legislature that appears to be impotent. But in June 1965, when our house was constructed, Salt Lake City, in my eyes, was perfect. In my later travels when I met folks and we have the small talk going and I get asked “where are you from”? I answer Salt Lake City. But I was only there from 1964 to 1976. But that’s really what I consider to be home.

This carousel has 100 slides documenting the construction of this memorable home.

In the blog posting Family History Project, I had posted a representative sample of the type and quality of photos in Carousel 5. Reference

19

It appears that the 19th videos were created as an after thought. Evidently the camera was stored and forgotten and then pulled out at the last minute for kiddy presentations. Somewhere along the line I believe some of the original video was recorded over as the girls basically used it for their own productions but had trouble turning off the camera and/or rewinding to review what they had filmed.

The video includes a bit of family history during the first year of using our pool, putting in a pond in the back yard, and early video of Dakota after she had recovered from her broken hip.

The 19th video (of 20) begins April 26, 1996 with an introduction to the new swimming pool constructed at 7011 Crested Quail in San Antonio.

[00:06:20] Hamstermania by Nataly and Sophia. April 28, 1996.

[00:10:43] Maggie on the loose.

[00:14:00] May 22, 1996. Violin concert (Nataly) at Coke Stevenson.

[00:25:15] November 2, 1996. Dum Dum dramatic presentation by Nataly and Sophia.

[00:26:21] Dakota with Nataly.

[00:26:50] Camera inexplicably left recording the front door for 13 minutes. Nothing to see here.

[00:38:58] March 20, 1997. Video probably recorded on top of unknown content. Dakota, kids, mom, pool.

[00:48:24] More filming of the front door for no apparent reason.

[00:56:10] Unknown date. Dance presentation by girls and friends.

[00:57:40] The front door, again.

[01:15:16] November 27, 1996. Tootsie Roll music by Sophia. Henry and June film by Nataly and Sophia. Girls messing around with video camera during Thanksgiving break, 1996.

[01:38:02] November 28, 1996. Isha with Sophi and Nataly.

[01:58:54] The final video clips include some shots of Isha, Mom, and the girls. The two clips have a time stamp that is out of sequence  so I can only figure that much of the video was recorded over by the preceding videos. I have no idea what was lost in those videos. The final clips are from May 12 and May 17, 1996 and include Hamstermania 2.

Here’s some video with Dakota and family—

17 and 18

Video 17 was a project done by the young girls. It is called The Mexican Chuckie. Here is a still of Chuckie—

Video 18 was a particularly informative video as it records our first year back in the U. S. We have a new video camera and there is better video quality then the previous tapes. Here is a quick synopsis of what is on the video—

[00:00:29] April 22, 1995. Hondo, Texas. While Hedy was signing up agents for Orlandi Valuta wire transfers , the girls and I would find things to do such as film surroundings, play catch with a softball, read a book. Interesting attack by ants made while filming a closeup.

[00:09:50] April 23, 1995. 7055 Crested Quail house construction. As it turns out we never moved into this house because of a misunderstanding of the exterior design.

[00:17:50] May 6, 1995. Gonzales, Texas.

[00:19:30] May 13, 1995. First Communion, San Antonio.

[00:23:00] May 20, 1995. Bandera, Texas.

[00:25:55] May 21, 1995. Grandma visit. Humingbirds, Lost Maples picnic. Grandma hiking in Lost Maples. Armadillo.

[00:51:00] May 29, 1995. Guadalupe River State Park.

[00:58:00] June 25, 1995. House construction at 7011 Crested Quail.

[00:01:07] July 8, 1995. Isha. Bike ride (girls) from Timberhurst residence to Les Harrison and Weybridge and back to Timberhurst. Long bike ride and a very hot day.

[01:17:00] July 12, 1995. Workers at 7011 Crested Quail. Girls make handprints in cement.

[01:19:00] July 15, 1995. Blanco State Park.

[01:32:00] July 24, 1995. 7011 Crested Quail progress on framing. July 26, 1995. Progress on roof.

[01:36:00] July 29, 1995. Sophi and Nata film Reading in Spanish. Tour of Timberhurst residence. Isha

[01:46:00] November 29, 1995. Swimming Pool construction. Dec 1 and Dec 5, 1995. Shooting gunnite.

[01:52:00] Dancing and singing.

[01:55:00] Dec. 7, 1995. Swimming pool deck install.

[01:56:00] Dec 22, 1995. Holmes Lake, Lincoln, Nebraska.

The last 5 minutes or so the camera was left running on a table inside a restaurant.

Here is a short excerpt of Sophi and Nataly’s First Communion, May, 1995.

More about Isha-

The 16th video is mostly blank. There is a short clip at the beginning that I took on a quick trip to the States to interview and apply for teaching jobs (California and Texas). I was very interested in San Antonio as it had been highly recommended by several students and parents as a great place to live. The clip shows me doing a walk through of a house to show Hedy what the possible living conditions could be.

The remaining 4 plus minutes on the tape show the girls at Batallón Callao. In April, 1994, Isha had a second batch of kittens. This was an exciting time for the 3 girls. Here is the clip-

Much of the 14th tape is blank.

Note to my daughters: It appears that I taped over a classroom video I was working on- with a Colegio Roosevelt colleague- in the process of recording the two events that I share here. That will explain the incongruent placement of this partial classroom video on the original tape.

[00:00:35] Skipping rope at Batallón Callao, September 9, 1993. This clip ends at [00:04:03]

[00:19:03] Isha’s Kittens. At Batallón Callao, October, 1993.

The first event is about skipping rope and documents, I believe, the learning process the girls have gone through in developing this skill. The second clip is a classic one. I have posted this earlier but the video quality was very poor. I made it from the 8mm > VHS sent it to grandma who had it for several years. I brought it back to San Antonio and converted it to a DVD and then used movie software to make the clip. Too many copies and the quality definitely worsened as each rendering became a bit poorer. Thankfully with the recent digitizing of the original 8mm tape to mp4 I can present a pretty good quality video of this wonderful event. And here they are—

My girls learning how to skip rope.

Girls introduce Isha’s kittens. Isha is not a happy cat. All kittens were eventually placed into homes.

These two videos will conclude the 13th tape.

It’s a few days before Sophi’s 7th birthday (Jan 31, 1993). She spends some time displaying her reading skills and then talking about what she has done during her vacation.

Valentine’s Day, 1993. A conversation with Vivian at our Batallón Callao home in Lima, Peru.

The 13th tape has a lot of family history on it…hence all these short videos.

Here’s two more—

This video takes place on Nataly’s 8th birthday, January 20, 1993. All 3 daughters are featured as well as their friend Alejandra and a cameo by Elizabeth and Isha.

Later in the day Nataly had a birthday party with a number of friends. Great summer day! Wild party!

…continuing with our long Family History theme and the 20 resurrected 8mm tapes found in our closet…

This next video was taken March 29, 1992. It is filmed in Parque Chavin which is about 1/2 block from our beloved house in Lima, Peru. A lot of construction has been going on in Parque Chavin, trees being planted, the area getting a massive makeover. Today March 4, 2023 the trees and shrubbery cover much of the park. Very beautiful park. Most of the park is surrounded by residences. As Vivian peddles around the park a large light blue government building appears in the background—Superintendencia Nacional de Educación Superior Universitaria (SUNEDU). A street vendor blowing his/her horn is a common background noise that one tends to turn off as it is prevalent most days. Sort of a mournful sound but it brings back the memory and flavor of our situation in Peru at this time. We loved it.

The following video was filmed a few days before Christmas, 1992, at our home in Lima.

The story goes that this blue bulb was hung on my father’s tree when he was a boy in Dwight, Illinois. Somehow it wound up with my family here in Lima. My sister Marilyn and I would fight to have the distinct honor of hanging it. My brother Bob was too little to know what was going on. So, this blue bulb is probably over 70 years old and survived many battles at the time this was filmed (1992).

On another note, wanting to be transparent, it grieves me to report that the blue bulb is no longer with us. It was broken when taken from storage at a future Christmas. I’m sorry Marilyn, that we were poor custodians of this heirloom.

Tape 13 video continues with some short clips from January 6 to Feb 20, 1992. The clips cover stops we made in Vivian, South Dakota (Vivian’s namesake), back in Grandma’s house in Lincoln where we collaborate with the Dannelly family in documenting some family history, Nataly learning to ride a bike, and the last video we are back in Lima with Nataly filming her two sisters at the pool.

January 6, 1992. Vivian, South Dakota provided a great photo op for our oldest daughter Vivian.

January 18, Lincoln, Nebraska. Some family facts and a lot of photo bombing.

January 20, 1992, Lincoln, Nebraska. Nataly’s 7th birthday.

February 20, 1992. Nataly narrates a short clip at our house at Batallón Callao, Lima. Sophi sings Popeye the Sailor Man.

Because there are a number of clips that are  about family history I will spread them out over two or three posts. These four clips were taken January 5 to January 6, 1992—

January 5, 1992: Hilda Jacobson and daughter Betty Hayes nee Jacobson provide some family history.

Timber Lake, South Dakota. Vivian and her Grandmother Betty (Class of 1941) in front of Timber Lake High School. January 5, 1992.
